At Catch a Fish, we believe our fishing charters are about more than catching trout or salmon. They are about creating shared value – where our guests, local communities and the environment all benefit. The lakes, fish, wildlife and landscapes we operate in are not just part of the experience; they are the foundation of our business. Sustainability is not a finish line for us; it is an ongoing journey of care, improvement and innovation. Our responsibility is simple: measure our impact, reduce what we can, prevent pollution, support restoration and be honest about our progress.

Our commitments

• Measure and reduce our footprint: We measure our business footprint through a third-party emissions tool and use the results to guide practical reductions in fuel, energy and resource use. We focus on avoiding and reducing impact first.
• Operate quietly and efficiently: We use an electric trolling motor for low-speed fishing, helping create a quiete experience with less disturbance and no direct exhaust fumes from the trolling motor while it is in use. Solar charging supports the battery system.
• Fish responsibly: Our approach is informed by knowledge, observation and a science-led understanding of fish, freshwater ecosystems and responsible fish handling. We encourage catch-and-release where suitable and agreed with guests, handle fish carefully, follow licence and catch-limit requirements, and contribute relevant information to lake-health and fishery monitoring initiatives.
• Prevent waste and pollution: Everything taken onto the boat comes back ashore. Fishing line and hooks are safely contained, key waste streams are separated, spill equipment is kept ready, and refuelling and cleaning procedures are designed to protect waterways.
• Choose responsibly: We choose local, durable and lower-waste products and suppliers, while never compromising safety, quality, compliance or reliability.
• Give back and restore nature: We contribute 1% of proceeds to local environmental and community initiatives and support practical restoration, lake-health, native planting and visitor-contribution opportunities where available.

Our current goals

• Measure our footprint annually through a third-party tool and use the results to guide reduction actions.
• Track fuel and resource use and record practical actions that reduce unnecessary consumption.
• Aim for at least 90% of guests to receive responsible-fishing, waste and care-for-place messaging.
• Encourage catch-and-release, with a working target of more than 50% of fish released where suitable and guest-agreed.
• Maintain active waste, spill and pollution-prevention controls.
• Continue contributing 1% of proceeds to local environmental and community initiatives and record tangible restoration or lake-health outcomes each year.

We also support the spirit of the Tiaki Promise: care for people, place and culture; travel with respect; tread lightly; and leave the places we visit better than we found them.
