Our Commitment to Care
Sustainability & Shared Value at Catch a Fish
At Catch a Fish, every charter is more than just a day on the water — it’s part of our promise to protect the places we love. We believe in creating shared value, where tourism benefits not only our guests but also the environment and community. That means running a state-of-the-art electric trolling motor powered by solar, so we fish in silence without fumes or anchoring damage, and partnering with local bakeries and restaurants so every trip also supports small businesses in Wānaka and Queenstown.
We’re also proud to be Impact Partners of Love Wānaka and Love Queenstown, committing 1% of our proceeds to projects that restore native forests, improve lake health, protect wildlife, and safeguard ecosystems for the future. On top of that, we’re a carbon neutral fishing charter, offsetting the emissions we can’t yet eliminate through certified programmes.
For us, sustainability isn’t a finish line — it’s an ongoing journey. We’re always learning, innovating, and looking for new ways to do better, so that the lakes, landscapes, and wildlife of Otago remain thriving and abundant for future generations to enjoy.
Fishing isn’t just about the catch—it’s about the journey, the patience, and the stories we create along the way.

EXCELLENT Based on 36 reviews Posted on Google Jacqui WilliamsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had a great day on the water with Olly. What a great skipper. I managed to catch a 3lb rainbow trout on Lake Wanaka, and there is always the one that got away. So if you want a great experience, make a booking. You won't regret it. Ollie was really well organised and easy to talk with. Demonstrating great kaitiakitanga and whanaungatanga. We learned about the differences between the fish species and how they were introduced in to the lake. At least twelve bites in the 3hrs, one eaten on board as sashimi, and a couple more for dinner. Couldn’t have asked for more really. We hope to get back aboard soon.Posted on Google Gia ZHANGTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This was my very first time fishing — and it happened in a lake in Queenstown, New Zealand!! Oh my god. Eating super fresh sashimi that we literally just caught… that kind of experience really feels like a once-in-a-lifetime moment. I’ll never forget it! Olly is an extremely experienced fisherman, and also incredibly funny and down-to-earth. It honestly felt like he knows everything about fishing. Most importantly — he cured my motion sickness. Absolute lifesaver!!! We spent over three amazing hours on the boat, chatting about everything, cheering together every time a fish was on the line, taking photos of each other, and even learning the classic trick of making the fish look five times bigger in photos 😂 The weather in Queenstown yesterday was perfect. During those three hours on the lake, besides fishing, eating fresh sashimi and having breakfast together, I couldn’t stop admiring how breathtaking Queenstown looks from the water. Seeing the town from the lake gives you a completely different perspective. In such a highly touristic town, I truly cherished this unique and authentic way of experiencing New Zealand. Highly, highly recommended — five stars without hesitation! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Posted on Google Jan ImhofTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This was an amazing 3 hour fishing trip with Olly! We had a wonderful morning on the lake and Olly made this trip very interesting and fun with 5 catches and one of the trout then was prepared for Sashimi. I highly recommend this trip.Posted on Google Belinda EvansTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. One of our favourite ever holiday activities! We did the three hour charter with Catch A Fish on beautiful Lake Wakatipu with Olly as our skipper. He was really knowledgeable and easy to chat to and gave our 14 year old son heaps of great fishing tips. Pastries were provided for morning tea and the boat was comfortable and super clean. We caught three trout and ate one of them as sashimi onboard. A fantastic experience!Posted on Google Randy Musterer (Sushi Randy)Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Not sure why this company is called Catch A Fish… it should be called Catch A Lot Of Fish!! Thanks to some last-minute planning genius (aka poor trip planning on our end), we tried booking a charter the day before and assumed we were completely out of luck. They were tentatively booked solid, but our captain, Olly, went above and beyond—creating an extra special charter for our group of five just to squeeze us in for a lake fishing adventure. Honestly, we expected maybe one fish… or none at all. Little did we know, Olly was about to make us all look foolish. He dropped us right on the spot, and within the first hour, we hooked three massive salmon in the first 60 minutes. We were convinced that was our peak moment—fish karma officially cashed in. But the trip wasn’t done surprising us. A couple of our first-time anglers wanted to try for rainbow trout, so Olly casually mentioned a secret honey hole near the marina. We made the run, and sure enough—boom—one rainbow trout hooked immediately. We landed it, hooked two more, but sadly lost them on the fight. No heartbreak though, because by that point we were already releasing fish like we worked for the Department of Marine Conservation. To top off an unforgettable day, Olly filleted two of the salmon on board, whipped out soy sauce and wasabi, and treated us to fresh New Zealand Chinook salmon sashimi right there on the boat. Paired with a couple bottles of rosé we brought along, it was the ultimate Sip & Sushi on a lake moment—Bay Area style, New Zealand sourced. Olly was insanely accommodating, especially considering most of our group had never fished before. His patience, expertise, and passion made everyone feel like pros (even though the salmon did most of the work). Highly recommend booking a trip with him. Top-tier customer service. Deep fishing knowledge. Unmatched experience design. And most importantly—he loves to catch a LOT of fish and create incredible memories for his guests. 10/10. Would charter again. 🎣Posted on Google David ZipkinTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My son and I had a great trip with Olly and highly recommend for anyone. We caught a bunch of beautiful rainbow and brown trout. Olly is knowledgeable, warm, and a great fisherman. Boat and gear are top notch. Would go out again if I had more time in QueenstownPosted on Google G. JonesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. A sedate afternoon. Perfect for getting over a hangover with a few byob beers. Good catch. 10 Rainbow/Brown trout up to 50 cms. Kept two for tea.Posted on Google Amanda WuTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. A lovely morning out fishing with Ollie. He’s knowledgeable and friendly. My 10yr old caught a number of rainbow trouts and almost got a salmon!Posted on Google Eve LohTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I joined the fishing trip without high expectations but found it thoroughly enjoyable. We managed to catch and release several fish, with the largest weighing 2.4 kg. Refreshments were provided, and we even enjoyed sashimi on board from the last fish we caught. Everything we needed was well prepared, and Oliver was highly professional throughout the trip. I was particularly impressed that the fish were carefully gutted, vacuum-packed, and stored in a cooler box until we brought them home.
